Trylon SMR has continually held the position that social media has its place in the marketing mix, but is only one arrow in a marketer's quiver. A recent blog post at econsultancy agrees and goes further - the author, Matt Owen, states that social media marketers need some basic training in marketing. 

Shrinking news cycles and ever-diminishing deadline horizons have caused anxiety and a frenetic need to perform faster, but does that actually get us anywhere? A recent article in the Columbia Journalism Review examines the increasing pressures on news organizations to provide instant, qualified, and credible information to a world that counts cycle times in seconds instead of days or hours.   

As noted in a recent blog post, the FTC is beginning to lower the boom on PR firms and marketers that are flaunting its disclosure policies regarding social and consumer generated media. The watchdogs are going after firms that use "pseudo bloggers" to post positive reviews or comments as part of a marketing campaign.   

Thanks in part to new digital platforms, Americans are now spending more time following the news than in the past, according to a recent news consumption report from Pew Research Center for People and the Press. While the proportion of Americans consuming news from traditional sources is either stable or edging downwards, more people are accessing news through the Web, their phones, e-mail and social networks than ever.
