Researchers have found that not only are multitaskers less productive than people who start and finish tasks one at a time, the activity can actually lower your IQ!

In fact, one study showed that people who were asked to multitask saw their IQ scores decline in a manner similar to people who stayed up all night or smoked pot. When people try to do two things at the same time, they generally do neither successfully.

Some research indicates that the effects of multitasking may not just be temporary. One study found that people who do a lot of multitasking have less brain density in key areas of the brain that are responsible for empathy and cognitive and emotional control.

This is particularly important in today’s age of constant connection to the Web. We have all seen the person walking into a fountain while they were texting. Business meetings are rife with attendees paying half their attention to the meeting and half to their smartphone.
